With this in mind, it's no surprise that those without a strong support system need to learn to adapt and overcome their surroundings with thoughtful strategies. With the holiday season approaching, it can be difficult to say 'no' to the tempting treats your family offers you with love. Here are just a few smart ways to gain your family's support as you develop a healthier lifestyle.
Communicate Clearly and Set Boundaries
Many dieters make it clear to their friends and family members that they're looking for support. Unfortunately, they don't always make it clear what kind of support they're looking for. Everyone is different, so think about the ways your family can help you to reach your weight loss goals. If you would rather not discuss your diet in any capacity during family gatherings, make it clear. If you'd rather go in the other room while your family eats treats or desserts, that's a viable option as well. Most of the time, all you have to do is set clear expectations regarding how your family can show you the best support possible.
Encourage Family Activities
While many family gatherings are centered around enjoying a meal together, that's far from the only way to enjoy each other's company and catch up. Encourage the group to take an after-dinner walk, play a game of football in the backyard, or go on a family bike ride. This is your chance to be a great influence and have a positive effect on your entire family.
