Small Changes for a Better New Year

With all the craziness that comes with the holidays, it is no wonder why so many of us struggle with weight and succumb to the traditional New Year’s resolution: to lose weight. Despite the challenges, making small changes now may make your resolutions a bit easier. See if any of these personalities resonate with you and use the tips provided to keep yourself healthy throughout the holiday season and beyond!

Socialite– your calendar is regularly booked with lots of holiday parties and social events.  You enjoy celebrating and spending time with friends – even though it may not always be best for your waistline.

Tip for success: Avoid arriving to a party feeling hungry – do what you do best and mingle! Intentionally pick which event you will splurge more on calories, otherwise load half your plate with veggies and make sure to add enough lean protein to keep you feeling satiated.

Chef/Baker- you embrace the holidays as another opportunity to show off your culinary skills! No matter what the occasion, you are ready with the perfect dish that keeps people coming back for more.

Tip for success: avoid nibbling during the cooking process. Eat a protein rich snack or meal before you start! If you need to sample the recipe keep it to a small bite. Keep in mind there are lots of people like you who are trying to stay healthy during the holidays. Challenge yourself to find easy swaps to keep it healthy (Most people won’t even realize you ‘healthified’ your recipe!).

Opportunistic Grazer– you tend to use food, and/or alcohol, to provide comfort, entertain boredom or help destress. Before you know it, that one slice of cheese became a ½ block!                                            

Tip for success:Incorporate mindful eating practices into your life. Do a bit of self-reflection to identify some non-food related activities that bring you joy. Incorporate these as often as needed throughout the holiday season – and beyond if needed!

Busy Bee– So much to do and so little time! You power through your to-do-list and at the end of the day you realize you haven’t eaten a single thing and now you are ravenous!                                      

Tip for success:Set reminders on your phone to eat every 3-4 hours. Keep your purse/car stocked with healthy snack options. Fueling yourself regularly will keep your energy levels high and help you be the most productive version of yourself!
