Healthy Foods for Game Day

I hope you are looking as forward to the football season as I am. And with the football season, of course, comes tailgating. Who doesn’t love a great tailgate? But the foods traditionally available at them can be less than healthy to say the least.


Here’s a list of healthier alternatives to traditional tailgate-favorites to try. We will start with ideas for the ‘proteins’, then follow-up next week with more ideas for the sides, beverages and desserts:

 Burgers

The Old Choice: Beef Hamburger, 20% fat 4 oz. = 290cals, 23g fat, 76mg sodium, 0g carb, 20g protein

New Choices:

  • Atkin’s Ranch New Zealand Lamb Burgers (1 patty=270 cals, 12g fat, 160mg sodium, 6g carb, 34g protein)
  • Trader Joe’s Chile Lime Chicken Burgers (1 patty= 150 cals, 6g fat, 310mg sodium, 3g carb, 19g protein)
  • Kirkland Brand Frozen Turkey Burgers (1 patty=200 cals, 6g fat, 390mg sodium, 2g carb, 35g protein)

Dogs

The Old Choice: Hebrew National Beef Franks 1 frank= 150 cals, 14g fat, 460mg sodium, 1g carb, 6g protein

New Choices:

  • Trader Joe’s Uncured Chicken Dogs (1 link = 60 cals, 2.5g fat, 250mg sodium, 1g car, 9g protein)
  • Applegate Organics Andouille Chicken & Turkey Sausage (1 link= 140 cal, 6g fat, 620mg sodium, 3g carb, 13g protein)
  • Eating Right Sausage Chicken Spinach & Feta (1 link = 120 cal, 5g fat, 530mg sodium, 1g carb, 15g protein)
  • Lightlife Smart Dogs Jumbo Protein Links, Vegetarian (1 link = 100 cal, 3.5g fat, 600 mg sodium, 4g carb, 13g protein)

Chili

The Old Choice: Wolf Brand Chili Mild with Beans Flavor 1 c. = 350 cals, 19g fat, 1050mg sodium, 25g carb, 18g protein

New Choices:

  • Health Valley Organic Vegetarian Black Bean Mole Chili (1 c. = 200 cals, 3g fat, 470mg sodium, 36g carb, 11g protein)
  • Amy’s Organic Medium Chili, Light in Sodium (1 c.= 280 cals, 9g fat, 340mg sodium, 35g carb, 16g protein)
  • Cook Simple Cowboy Chili with Quinoa & Cinnamon (1/3 c. dry mix = 140 cals, 1.5g fat, 300mg sodium, 27g carb, 7g protein) *Note: this option is cooked with 1 can diced tomatoes, water and your choice 1 lb. lean meat such as turkey, chicken or 93% lean ground beef
