Are You As Fit As A 5th grader?
How many push-ups can you do? Could you jog or do a mile-long walk?
At the end of each school year, I hear from my kids about how they are getting "tested" on their fitness levels and they hope to get the "President's Award."
The President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, which for decades has provided tests of children's fitness and medals for those who pass, launched a few months ago an adult version that asks these same questions. Just like the youth version, this test is designed to assess and monitor aerobic fitness, muscular strength, endurance, flexibility and body composition.
The online self-test (http://www.adultfitnesstest.org/) puts participants through a series of challenges such as running a mile-and-a-half or performing as many sit-ups as possible in a minute. The results are compared with those for others of the same gender and age. One can then print out a certificate of completion if desired. Participants are then encouraged to take additional action through the President's Challenge (http://www.presidentschallenge.org/) and use the web site to track their ongoing progress and fitness.
So if you are like me (or my age!!), you probably remember these President's physical fitness challenges we did as kids. You may remember them fondly or with distain but this idea probably resonates with all of us. I say....have fun with it and give it a try. Who knows, you may impress the kids in your life and possibly YOURSELF!
